Prima Fleur Essential Oil: VETIVER

Native to South India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, vetiver is of the Poacceae family that includes grasses and plants characterized by their elegant underground root systems. The two-year wait time for the roots to mature,  plus the arduous work of planting, pulling up the roots by hand, and washing, cleaning, parsing, and drying them before the steam distillation procedure can even begin is testament to vetiver essential oil’s value. Our Vetiveria zizanioides ~ Prima Fleur Vetiver Essential Oil [No. 218] ~ is from Java, where the plant is called akar wangi, meaning “fragrant root.” Good quality, mature dried Javanese vetiver root yields from 1.5 to 2% essential oil. Oils derived from older roots have higher specific gravities and optical rotations than younger roots and produce a richer and fuller quality of oil.

Adaptable and sturdy, the vetiver plant is widely used to make fragrant blinds, shielding the sun’s rays and infusing homes with earthy notes. Fans formed from the roots and embellished with embroidery are dipped in water and wafted in front of the face to provide blissful relief from Southern Asia’s heat. For more substantial needs, the plant can be used as material to make thatched huts and floor mats. Vetiver also provides excellent protection from soil erosion.

Yet the true treasure of this tufted grass is the essential oil derived from the root. In folklore, vetiver oil is used to increase financial abundance. In more common ritual, inhaling the oil is said to protect the body from menacing energies, including physical illness. Vetiver is employed in massage and aromatherapy for its grounding influence, to calm the central nervous system of one who feels “uprooted.” When used by a skilled practitioner, vetiver can be prescribed to increase blood flow and reduce muscle pain. Vetiver essential oil acts as a moisturizing humectant for dry, irritated skin and is found in cosmetics, soaps, and natural perfumes as a fixative.

The main constituents of vetiver essential oil are vetiverone (bitter earthiness), vetiverol (sweet woody odor), and zizanol, an insect repellent. The oil blends well with lemongrass, grapefruit, evergreens, frankincense, myrrh, rose, and sandalwood, and is used primarily as a base note with tenacity and a richly distinctive masculinity.

Prima Fleur Premier Products: SAMPHIRE EYE CREME

Samphire Eye Crème [Prima Fleur No. 1214] is formulated to soothe the delicate eye area. Each ingredient in this all-botanical formula is selected for efficacy and gentleness, specifically addressing issues of skin wrinkling, loss of elasticity, puffiness, hyper-pigmentation, reversal and prevention of free-radical damage.

The first sensation upon application is a dramatic feeling of soothing, cooling relaxation of the eye area. It is provided by its namesake ingredient, Crithmum maritimum, a sturdy variety of sea fennel that thrives in rocky, salt-sprayed regions along the pristine North Atlantic sea cost. Its common name, Samphire, is a variety of the name St. Peter, patron saint of fisherman.

Distilled to an aromatic water, Samphire has the ability to induce the skin's endorphin release from keratinocytes and sensory neurons, and provide a sensation of soothing calmness. Endorphins activate opiate receptors expressed in the limbic or "emotional" brain, which plays an important part in the sensation of pleasure.

One of the many beneficial ingredients able to effect desirable change is Saccharomyces cerivisiae extract which increases celluylar-oxygen consumption. Prima Fleur Essential Oil: ORANGE

Orange essential oil is produced from cells inside the rind of an orange fruit. In contrast to most essential oils, it is extracted as a by-product of orange juice production by centrifugation, producing a cold-pressed oil. It is composed of mostly (greater than 90%) d-limonene. Limonene gives citrus that rich juicy aroma. Prima Fleur Orange Essential Oil [No. 190] and certified-organic Orange oil [No. 243] are made in the USA.

Orange oil has beneficial anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and antiseptic qualities. Applying orange oil to the skin not only helps to reduce inflammation and soothe sore muscles. It can also improve the skin tone and texture and combat acne and dermatitis. The natural disinfectant qualities of orange oil also make it useful for cleaning and treating scratches, scrapes and other minor wounds.

The strong, appealing scent of orange essential oil makes it a popular choice for aromatherapy applications. It is believed the smell of orange oil may improve one's overall mood, promote relaxation and peace of mind, reduce anger and anxiety, and even act as a natural aphrodisiac.

Prima Fleur Essential Oil: JASMINE

Jasmine grandiflorum
Jasmine is a deeply fragrant vine or shrub that grows easily in most gardens within its cold hardiness zone. The plant's small, delicate flowers emit a strong, exotic scent that fills the air in spring and summer. Jasmine flowers are used to make perfumes, and jasmine tea is thought to be soothing. Spanish jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) and Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac) share some of the same characteristics, but are distinctly different plants. Jasminum grandiflorum is sometimes called Jasminum officinale f. affine, or summer jasmine.

Our Jasmine grandiflorum Essential Oil is available as CO2-extracted [Prima Fleur No. 380]  - or solvent-extracted [Prima Fleur No. 188]. Or choose our Jasmine sambac Essential Oil [Prima Fleur No. 245].

In aromatherapy, jasmine oil is recommended to ease physical pain, and is considered a powerful antiseptic, sedative and tonic to ease breathing difficulties, coughing and nervous conditions. Combined with Ylang Ylang, it is said the mixture helps promote a healthy state of mind and body.

Jasmine sambac
Jasminum grandiflorum produces its flowers in clusters at the tips of its arching branches in summer. The white, five-petaled flowers are up to 1-inch wide and may have faint pink tinges on the undersides of the petals and on the buds. Jasminum sambac's flowers start out pure white and fade to pastel pink as the blooming season wears on. The flowers have a waxy appearance and are about the same size as Spanish jasmine blooms. Arabian jasmine flowers appear in clusters of three to 12 from spring through autumn.

In cosmetics, a-bisabolol is present in many products due to its soothing properties. For the natural perfumer, the soft floral, fruity, woody aroma with a slow dry-down would be a good bridge or binder note.

Prima Fleur Carrier Oil: FORAHA

Prima Fleur Foraha Oil [No. 401] Calophyllum inophyllum is cold-pressed in Madagascar. It has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory,  and anti-neuralgic properties, having been used in the South Pacific as a traditional remedy for nerve symptoms of leprosy, where the tree is known as Tamanu. The oil is thick and luxurious and absorbs readily into the skin. It is opaque and brownish green with a vegetative, herbal odor.

The botanical name comes from kalos, the Greek word for beautiful, and phullon, which signifies leaf. The oil resulting from this so-named "beautiful leaf" tree was used by women as face cream in Polynesia, but its benefits have been proven as well by contemporary research, according to the book The Healing Trail: Essential Oils of Madagascar. Missionaries to the Fijian Islands in the 1920s discovered that the oil relieved the painful nerve swelling of leprosy. French doctors later confirmed its success as a treatment for cuts, burns, and wounds, all traditional uses in the areas where it is grown. Additional medical research has uncovered potential benefits of compounds in the oil for diseases as serious as cancer and HIV.

To create the oil, fruit is collected after it falls from the trees in December. The nutlike seeds are removed and placed on racks to dry for a month or two, at which point they wrinkle and darken, becoming sticky with oil. At this time they are ready for the cold press extraction. The tree also grows in other parts of Eastern Africa and in India and Southeast Asia.
