Prima Fleur Essential Oil: CANDEIA

Candeia Essential Oil [Prima Fleur No. 368] is from the bark of a Brazilian tree. The bark produces a clear oil containing over 95% alpha-bisabolol, a component that has long been used in medicine to fight inflammation, and is well known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-viral properties.

In cosmetics, a-bisabolol is present in many products due to its soothing properties. For the natural perfumer, the soft floral, fruity, woody aroma with a slow dry-down would be a good bridge or binder note.

Prima Fleur Essential Oil: OWYHEE

Steam-distilled in Oregon, our Owyhee Essential Oil, Artemisia ludoviciana, [Prima Fleur No. 321] is clear, colorless, non-viscous. It is full of esters (over 85%) and the scent is strongly fruity, with herbal and spicy back-notes like Roman chamomile. Since it contains more esters than Roman chamomile it makes a great substitute that is very fragrant and much more economical than that imported product.

Owyhee hydrosol is very floral and fruity in scent and can be substituted for the water in any skin care product where it will be very beneficial for skin care and where you might want a soothing anti-inflammatory. It can be used in the bath for soothing the skin, as a soothing facial spray, or as a fragrant mister on bed linens for scent and sleep.

With its high ester content, the oil has powerful uses for skin care and in custom body care products as a relaxing inhalant or in fragrant blends for perfume, or in massage oils. It helps heals inflamed skin, and in aromatherapy can help calm the mind.

Prima Fleur CO2 Extract: ORRIS ROOT

Orris root (Iris germanica) is the aged and dried rhizome of the cherished iris flower. Named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow and messenger of the gods, Iris. The flower bursts to life each spring from the rhizome in a variety of vibrant hues, including yellow, salmon-pink, white, and the deep violet-blue so perfectly depicted in Vincent Van Gogh’s stunning painting, Irises (1889).

To the French, the three petals of the flower symbolize faith, wisdom and valor. The flower itself is often used symbolically in ceremony. This “eye of heaven,” as it has been called, is a wonder of nature appreciated for its beauty, exquisiteness, and fragrance.

The sweet scent of iris flowers is indeed heavenly, but it is the root where we find the luscious scent of violets and woods that characterize the extract called Orris root. The rhizome (root) contains the highest concentration of the desired irones compounds. Though the flower petals reach the height of their beauty by the second year, the roots must age for two to three years before they reach full maturity. During this time, the slow oxidation of triterpenoid creates the active ingredients and odorants.

In the final year, the plant can grow as tall as a person. It is necessary for the ground to be carefully weeded and maintained throughout this period. Often,  whole families assume this task and, when the plant has arrived at maturity, they tend to the long, labor-intensive pulling, cutting and drying process.

Prima Fleur's Orris Root Extract [No. 244] is of the Iris germanica variety, and is used for perfumery, and for food and flavoring. This variety of sword lily iris is also known as “Orris of Verona” whose flowers are deep violet-blue. Plant material, mainly from Morocco, is processed by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, yielding 1 kilo of extract from around 34 kilos of raw material.

Although orris may have been used medicinally at one time, its chief uses are in perfumery, soap making, and to flavor liquors, from vermouth to gin. While the Iris pallida of Italy and China has direct floral and green notes, the Iris germanica boasts fruitier, richer, strong berry notes suited for these multiple industries. The distinctive violet-like odor is the definition of luxury and of an era of romantic indulgence. Orris root blends well with florals of neroli, rose, and geranium, as well as green notes of violet leaf and galbanum.

Global View: "Takulandirani" (Welcome) to Malawi, Africa

Malawi is famous for its slogan “the warm heart of Africa” because of its warm, friendly people and abundant natural resources. Located in southern Africa, bordering Tanzania in the north, Mozambique in the east and south, and Zambia in the west, it ranks among the world’s most densely populated and least developed countries. The economy is predominately agricultural with about 85% of the population (over 13 million) living in rural areas.

We currently purchase a beautiful rose geranium oil from a community grower in Malawi. Our Rose Geranium Essential Oil [No. 157] is certified under the USDA’s National Organic Program as well as EU certified through BCS OKO-Garantie GMBH Germany. This oil is a gorgeous emerald green with heavy notes of rosy floral and herbal-infused honey.

Planting rose geranium crops in the fields of Malawi.
An abundant crop and the native workers who harvest it.

There are more than 700 varieties of cultivated geranium; however, most are grown for ornamental purposes only. The oil producing species are P. graveolens, P. radens and P. capitatum. Pelargoniums are native to South Africa, and the Sotho used a paste made from the leaves to treat wounds and abscesses. The well-known geranium oil "Bourbon" is produced from the cultivars Rose, which is a hybrid of P. radens and P. capitatum.

Distillation process ... and the final beautiful essential oil.

Between 300 and 500kg of plant material is required to obtain about 1kg of essential oil. Most of the essential oil glands are found in the leaves. After cutting, the plants are partially dried leaving less water to be vaporized and extracted from the plant material during the distillation, thereby increasing the yield of oil. Geranium oil has been described as a natural perfume complete unto itself. It is often used to scent soaps and detergents because, unlike many other essential oils, rose geranium's aroma profile is not readily affected by the alkaline nature of soap products. Rose geranium varies much across strains and distillations, in part because the plant is greatly influenced by the climate and soil in which it grows.

A borehole for running water ... food distribution.

We have recently received reports from the Rotary Club of Limbe and Gift of the Givers, two African-based organizations that have been developing community projects to improve the living standards of this profoundly poor area. Projects include improving agricultural production, water quality and sanitation, healthcare, education, access roads, as well as food and vitamin distribution, donations of solar lighting (many villages in the air have no electricity at all), and developing income-generating activities. We are proud to be part of the solution in this area as we contribute to this effort by supporting the growers who produce such a remarkable essential oil.
